Phone wallpapers: safe zones, lock screens and OLED battery

A phone wallpaper is mostly hidden. Composing for what's left is the whole trick.

A desktop wallpaper is a picture you look at. A phone wallpaper is a picture you look atthrough — a clock, a date, notifications, a row of shortcuts and a home indicator sit on top of it, and on the home screen you add five rows of icons. Most wallpapers that disappoint on a phone are fine images composed for the wrong shape.

The safe zone

Roughly, on a modern phone in portrait, your lock screen divides into three regions:

So your focal point wants to sit in the middle 60%, biased slightly low. A portrait subject whose face is at the top of the frame will spend its life behind a clock. This is also why images with a strong horizon around the two-thirds line read so well on phones — the sky supports the clock without competing with it, and the detail sits in the clear band.

Home screen is a different problem

On the home screen the icon grid covers nearly the whole surface. What matters there isn't composition, it's contrast — whether your icon labels stay readable. Busy, high-contrast wallpapers make white label text hard to read exactly where it's brightest. This is precisely why iOS blurs the home screen wallpaper by default, and why a soft gradient or a dark scene works better behind icons than a detailed one.

Getting the crop right

Phone aspect ratios sit around 19.5:9 to 20:9 — much taller than the 16:9 of a desktop wallpaper. Setting a landscape image on a phone shows you a narrow vertical strip through the middle, losing roughly two thirds of the width. That's not a crop you can fix in the picker.

Two options:

Resolution

Match or exceed your phone's pixel resolution — commonly 1170 × 2532, 1080 × 2400, or 1290 × 2796. Note that some Android launchers request a wallpaper wider than the screen so it can scroll as you swipe between home screens, and will crop a screen-width image to compensate. A slightly oversized image avoids that.

OLED and battery: what's actually true

On an OLED or AMOLED panel every pixel emits its own light, and a true black pixel is simply switched off. So a mostly-black wallpaper genuinely draws less power, and the effect is measurable — various tests put it in the range of a few percent of total battery for a predominantly black display, more at high brightness.

Important caveats:

Choose a dark wallpaper because it looks good and is easier on your eyes at night. Treat the battery saving as a small bonus rather than the reason.

Quick checklist

  1. Portrait image, at or above your phone's native resolution.
  2. Focal point in the middle 60% of the height.
  3. Lower contrast or a darker image for the home screen, so icon labels stay readable.
  4. Dark and near-black if you're on OLED and care about battery.
  5. Check it with notifications present, not just on a clean lock screen.
