Spanning looks incredible when it works and terrible when it doesn't. Here's how to tell which case you're in.
There are two completely different things people mean by "multi-monitor wallpaper", and mixing them up is why setups end up looking broken. Either you want one image stretched across all your screens, or you want a separate image on each screen. They need different files and different settings.
This is the dramatic one — a single landscape that continues across the bezels. It only looks right under fairly specific conditions.
An image whose resolution equals the combined width of your monitors by theirshared height:

A standard 4K wallpaper is 3840 × 2160. On two 1080p screens that's the correct width but twice the height — set to Fill, it will crop the top and bottom half away, which usually removes the part you liked. Spanning works best with images actually composed at panoramic ratios.
macOS has no native span mode — it treats each display independently. To span, you have to cut the image into per-screen pieces yourself and set each half, or use a third-party utility.
Three things break it, and they're all worth checking before you blame the image:
There's also the bezel question. A spanned image ignores the physical gap between panels, so a face or a horizon crossing the boundary appears shifted. Some people compensate by cropping a bezel's width out of the middle; most people just avoid putting the focal point on the seam.
Honestly, this is the better choice for most setups, and it's the only sane option if your monitors don't match. Each screen gets a normal wallpaper at its own native resolution.
If you're not sure which monitor is which, open Display settings and clickIdentify — a large number flashes on each screen.
Open System Settings → Wallpaper. A separate section appears for each connected display; pick an image under each. Note that if Displays have separate Spaces is turned off in Desktop & Dock, macOS may apply one wallpaper to all screens.
Two unrelated wallpapers side by side reads as clutter. What holds a multi-screen desktop together is a shared palette and a shared brightness level. Two dark forest scenes look deliberate. A dark forest next to a bright pastel sky looks like a mistake, and the brightness mismatch is genuinely tiring if the screens are in your peripheral vision all day.
Look for the same tag on both — pick two fromcyberpunk, or two fromnature, and they'll almost always sit well together.
A 3440 × 1440 ultrawide is a single display, so there's no spanning involved — you just need a 21:9 image. Setting a 16:9 wallpaper to Fill on an ultrawide crops about a quarter of the height, which is why so many 4K wallpapers look badly cut on them. Fit is a reasonable alternative if you don't mind side bars; on an OLED they're pure black and nearly invisible.
